2 & 4 are in very high-prof gigs for that genre, though, which would explain it. & both can play the live stuff to the click.

ALL, yes ALL of the contenders in this category should not be in there. FACT.

El Negro = Jazz? Do me a favour!! (I'll come to him later)
Steve Smith = One of the best contemporary jazz drummers of the year? Really? If conemporary jazz means twirling your sticks or doing hi-hat tricks, then I guess so!?!?!?!
Antonio Sanchez - peripheral, but fair enough.
Chambers = Fusion full stop. As great as Dennis is, he has never in my book, been classed as a jazz player. Contemporary or otherwise.

Why is there no mention of Brian Blade? Jack De Johnette? Bill Stewart? Tain? Joey Baron? Clarence Penn? Paul Motion? Idris Mohamed? Ari Hoenig? Erskoman? Nussbaum? John Marshall? Jorge Rossy? etc etc etc.

When you consider the great living exponents of contemporary jazz that are, thank God still alive, it absolutely astounds and amzes me that fucking bedroom drummers and editors alike would lump Horacio El Negro Hernandez in the category of "Best Contemporary Jazz Drummer" (unless Groovissimo has made a mistake with this!)

If this is the intelligence and level of understanding of contemporary jazz that Modern Drummer Magazine has, then I'll never buy another copy again. This is clearly the drumming equivalent of The Beano!!

You are right about the Contemporary Jazz category... does not make sense !

By the way, all of these winners are correct according to MD.

But, as we've said in the past, this is like a popularity contest, and the most popular or better known always win !

Don't forget, that this Poll reflects who the majority of Modern Drummer's readers are.

If this Contemporary Jazz category was polled by readers of Downbeat, Jazz Iz, or other jazz mags, the result would be different.

As for Mike Portnoy, he is the king in New Jersey. So, he gets the prize every year !
